Frame Averaging is the capturing of multiple images. These images are then averaged mathematically into one resultant image. You could think of this as blurring all the images together to make one composite image. The result is a cleaner image with less background snow. The more images you average the cleaner the result.
Why do microscope users need Frame Averaging ?
All cameras have some level of background noise. With microscopes the light levels get lower as the magnification increases. The cameras then automatically increase the gain to increase the light levels. This results in amplifying the background noise.
The higher the magnification, the lower the light and the higher the noise. Frame Averaging comes to the rescue to clean up these images. If you plan on printing these images this will make a big difference. If you plan on performing image analysis Frame Averaging will also make a big difference. If you want to compress these images Frame Averaging will make a big difference. ( clean images compress to smaller files sizes with less artifacts )
